Wow! It's been a while!

I was just looking at my blog and realized how long it's been since I updated it! Goodness, time flies. Life's been busy, but I've managed to squeeze in a cake or two. One of my favorite projects was for the wedding of my friend's daughter, Heather. Heather was marrying her sweetheart, Brandon, one week before they were moving to Okinawa, where he would be stationed with the US Marines for three years. It was an absolute pleasure doing their cake for them.
For the guests I did cupcakes in 3 flavors: white vanilla with pink buttercream, red velvet with cream cheese and chocolate orange apricot with limoncello frosting. For the bride and groom I did a simple red velvet cake with cream cheese frosting, covered with white fondant and decorated with the bride's flowers - stargazer lilies.
The vanilla and red velvet cupcakes were adorned with custom fondant hearts with the bride's and groom's initials.
Here I am with the final table.

I thought I'd get a couple of pictures up (finally!) from Labor Day weekend, which I spent with friends down near Ensenada, Mexico. It was a fun and relaxing weekend, just as it is every time, but it was made more special because it was Nancy's birthday! I brought her a small individual cake (which she enjoyed taking a bite of!), and I made cupcakes for everyone else. We thought a beach theme would be fun, so I went for a bright blue cream cheese frosting on top of banana/walnut cupcakes. The toppers were seashells molded from white and milk chocolate.

Wow! Just when I thought I couldn't get busier, I got orders for three different events for the same day! This was my first time doing cakes for children - there was a 1-year old girl and a 3-year old boy - and I was very happy with how they turned out. The princess-themed party for the 1-year old was well-attended, so I made the main cake in the shape of a tiara along with a separate matching sheet cake. The birthday girl got her own star-shaped magic wand cake!

The cake for the 3-year old boy was based on the cake I got for my birthday a couple of years ago - a dirtbike track complete with whoops and a finish line! The parents wanted a chocolate cake, so I made chocolate mousse to top the cake since the color was more like the color of dirt. It was delicious!

A Busy Weekend!

Last weekend ended up being the busiest yet! I had two cakes that I made for two very different occasions. The first was a memorial cake for a special woman who enjoyed spending much of her time on the beaches of Southern California. I made a simple 12-inch square cake that I covered in baby blue fondant and adorned with fondant sea shells and sparkle dust. I was very happy with the cake!

The second cake I made was for the Palo Verde Rod & Gun Club to commemorate the opening of dove hunting season. I'm starting to get more adventurous now with the figurines, so I made a sleeping hunter and his dog, who wasn't sleeping, but keeping an eye on the doves!

Last Saturday we had a party for a friend out in Palo Verde, my favorite Colorado River weekend getaway. She had just had her 40th birthday, and I was asked to make a river themed cake to celebrate the occasion.

It was my first time making figures, but I really wanted to make characters representing my friend and her boyfriend. After one massively failed attempt at realism, I decided to go for cute! The little chubby couple looked great on top of the cake, sitting on their favorite sand bar, fishing!

Welcome to Morsels & Mouthfuls, my online blog to showcase my work with cakes and cupcakes.

My interest in cake making began in 2000, when I was planning my “budget” wedding reception. Since I was having my talented friends take care of the food and drinks for the reception, I decided to tackle the wedding cake. Our wedding was very casual, and if I had to say there was a theme, it would have to be daisies. As a result, I combined this daisy theme with my new-found interest in whimsy cakes to create my first cake.

Going through the planning and decorating process with this cake got me hooked! I’ve been making cakes ever since, for a variety of occasions. The purpose of a cake, in my opinion, is to represent and enhance the experience of the occasion, so I try to give a lot of attention to the appearance of the cake. Cake and cupcake decorating has become for me a form of art, and I am delighted when others can appreciate and enjoy it.

Some of my most fun work has come from doing cakes for milestone birthdays. This first one was especially fun. My friend, Jenn, was having a party to celebrate her 30th birthday, and I made this "Dirty at 30" cake for the occasion. A giant fondant martini glass sits on top of a red-iced round cake. The stuffed green olives are also made out of fondant.

40th Birthday

I've done a few cakes for 40th birthdays, some as simple as this brightly colored 4-"O" 2-tier birthday cake, covered in custom colored fondant with colorful fondant dots and rings. Multiple tier cakes are a great way to add dimension to a cake, not to mention another flavor!

So far, however, my favorite 40th birthday cake has to be this one I made for my sister's 40th birthday, which we themed: "Fab at 40!" And we went for *fabulous*!! The centerpiece was a 2-tier cake; the bottom tier was decorated in a zebra stripe pattern, and the top was a striking red and black. Feathers, mini disco balls and flashy beads adorned the cake, and the tall silver candles added extra height. In addition to the cake, I made two types of cupcakes: Boston creme with dark chocolate frosting and orange, papaya and chocolate cupcakes with Limoncello frosting. Cute fondant tags for the cupcakes read either "Diva," "Fab" or "40."

The last of milestone cakes to show here is this fun over-the-hill 50th birthday cake that I made for a co-worker of mine. The cake is in the shape of a casket, covered in (of course!) black fondant with fondant R.I.P. lettering. My favorite part is the message: "Here lies Dean's youth." He loved it!

Wedding Cakes

Here are a couple of more recent wedding cakes that I have done. Both are 3-tier cakes, one round and one square, covered in white fondant and embellished with fresh flowers.

Here are some more images of cupcakes that I have done. These were for a bridal shower. Again I made the chocolate cupcakes with Limoncello frosting and sprinkled papaya, as well as red velvet cupcakes with cream cheese frosting and red sprinkles. The red hearts and white bells are made out of fondant and nestled sweetly into the frosting.

Other Fun Cakes

Like I said, I make cakes and cupcakes for any occasion, and the more creative, the better! Here is a sampling of the other cakes that I have made.
